For more than a decade Vanessa Winship has developed long term projects in different parts of the world capturing everyday life, ranging from encounters on the street to engaged portraits. Working primarily in black and white her images are simultaneously timeless and contemporary and often weave an explorative narrative related to the desire to evoke a sense of place.
In ‘she dances on Jackson’ (2011-2012) Winship explores vast swaths of the United States using a variety of approaches including straight portraits, chance encounters and documents of the urban and natural landscape. It was this variety of subject matter which drew me to Winship’s work for the Hariban Award and my own desire to see this variety of photographic approach transformed into collotype prints.
